Testing the Hypothesis

Who: People who get coffee to go, people who do homework and study at home, people who aren’t students and don’t go to the library,
What: There is a need for more study spaces and hangout places.
Why: Their intentions are different. For people in Gainesville, hanging out at coffee shops is a trend. Depending on the coffee shop and time of day, the people sitting at tables may be doing homework or they may be chatting with a friend. These people may not be a student but it’s not just students who get coffee. The library is a little different because you have to be a UF student to use the facility.

I interviewed two people who prefer to do their homework in their room. I interview an adult who is not a student. I interviewed a person who gets their coffee to go and I interviewed someone who doesn’t like coffee. I found in my interviews that these people either don’t encounter the issue or don’t find it an issue. When I asked the students who study at home why they prefer that, the said it was easier and more quiet. They both said they have in the past studied at public places and been able to be productive. I found that people who I didn’t expect to have the unmet, will still benefit from my solution. The application could help people who are trying to hurry and get coffee, know how busy a place is.

Inside the Boundary
Outside the Boundary
1)  Students who do homework at libraries and coffee shops, People who hang out at coffee shops
1) People who get coffee to go, people who do homework at home, people who aren’t UF students
2) A place to sit usually for more than one person, not being able to know before traveling to the location
2) a lack of coffee shops or libraries
3) There isn’t a way to know how busy a place is until you get there unless you know someone there or call and ask
3) Businesses want to get people inside their store even if there is not seating at the moment

  1. Meg,
I think you addressed this assignment well, and I appreciate that you gave information regarding your interviews. It was interesting to read who you interviewed and a summary of their thoughts on the subject. I also think you make great points here, like how hanging out at coffee shops is a trend in your why section. The assignment is organized well and you did a good job!

  2. Hey Megan,
I agree with your point that is not enough places to go to study, especially on campus. I use to head to the library early just to secure a spot, but now I just stay in my apartment and study. If there was a way to know how many people were at the library and how many spaces were available it would be beneficial to many people.

  3. Hey Meg. I think your idea of having a need for more study and hangout places is a good one. You did a good job explaining the who, what, and why and built on it by working inside the boundary and outside the boundary. I am one of those people who prefer to do their homework in my room! Nice post.

  4. Megan,
I believe that there is an app that is similar to your idea. It is called FOMO, and it tracks the lines at bars in midtown. I think that you could get in contact with him to talk about your idea and see if it makes sense. You could also talk about your boundaries and see if he agrees with your parameters you set. Either way, I think that you are correct, that there are people who are dissuaded from using the libraries because they think they’re packed. This is especially a problem during finals week.
